Satin comforters, duvets & quilts  -  stylish living and cozy sleeping!

Knowing their differences and appreciating their luxury

A Satin Comforter traditionally covers the bed from head to foot.   This luxurious item of satin bedding covers the bed and normally drops between 15” - 21” (38cm – 54cm) over the sides and foot of the bed.   It consists of two outer sheets of fabric stitched together as a sandwich.   These are filled with a warm soft material that can be either natural, synthetic or a mix.   The comforter is normally quilted and usually reversible. Comforters are found in many patterns, colors and styles, and in satin, they can stand alone in all their glory without a cover or bedspread.

Satin Duvets generally have a cover, and one needs to be aware that many companies and manufacturers using satin may also be refering to the duvet cover as a 'satin duvet'.   And there lies a major difference between a comforter and a duvet.   The outer material of a duvet is generally made of a practical, less 'showy' fabric.   A duvet was and still can be filled with a natural down of feathers, (somewhat similar to the traditional eider-downs). It also needed a cover to protect one from the protruding sharp end of the feather stuffing, as well as the practicality of being able to just remove and wash the 'duvet cover'.   As they generally don't have the large 'drop' of a comforter, duvets can be smaller and are more easy to tuck cozily under and around oneself.   Luxurious as a satin duvet may be, it is the satin of the 'duvet cover' that one feels and enjoys.

The Satin Duvet Cover completely encloses the duvet.   It becomes the upper sheet of the bed and would readily be complemented with a satin lower sheet.   Whereas a satin comforter (rather like a blanket) is normally used above and together with an upper sheet, comforter covers offer another practical alternative to easy bed making and bedding washing.    Comforter covers are bigger in size than duvet covers.

Satin quilts are very elegant.   A quilt generally has an ornately fashioned upper fabric with a lower lining cloth, both of which can be satiny. The quality of the material and the method of stitching together or 'quilting' in specific patterns provides for its endless varieties of design.   A bedspread or counterpane could be referred to or described as a quilt or 'quilted'.   You can get padded quilts, indeed satin comforters are normally quilted.
