Satin is derived from Zaytun, the name of the seaport in China where satins and silks were famously exported to the rest of the world in the Middle Ages. Originally satin was made from silk but with the all important defining characteristic of the satin weave. This generally gives the material a lustrous and smooth surface, or face, or top, or front side but with dull back or under side.

Satin is considered to be one of the three most basic types of textile weaves. The fabric is made in various weights for a wide variety of uses, such as in satin bedding (satin sheets, bedspreads, etc); evening wear (evening gowns, dresses, shawls and accessories, etc); dressing for special occasions (bridal satin, etc); satin lingerie; as well as many other miscellaneous purposes: brocades, linings for jackets, satin slip lining, upholstery for the bedroom, or boudoir as well as general reception rooms. Though originally satin was a type of weave used in silk production, it is now made from a variety of different materials. One should more precisely say that many different types of fabrics now use a satin weave to create a new variety or range for that particular material.

Brocade is a woven type of opulent looking fabric with highly decoratively images or illustrations within the weave. It is usually made on a shuttle loom or typically the Jacquard loom. It generally combines silk or a satin-class material and sometimes has slightly garish colored threads such as silver and gold intertwined. Nowadays this type of satin of silk material can be used for furnishings and bedspreads, though traditionally its function was in a more formal or ornamental role.
